Spain’s latest attempt to control immigration
March 18, 2008
First groups of 186 Senegalese temporary workers have arrived in Spain - 744 more are expected to join them soon. These temporary workers are employed in the strawberry fields of Huelva for a period of 3 months and receive 36 Euros a day.
Most of these are women between 18 and 40 years of age, and have been chosen from thousands of candidates who expected to benefit from this hire program, launched as an alternative to illegal immigration.
In an act of farewell in the main Lounge of the airport, the Minister of Interior, Ousmane Ngom, encouraged his people to behave as real ambassadors of their countries in Spain.
He also encouraged the workers to be role model workers, to comply with all Spanish Laws and the clauses of the signed contract. He insisted they return when the season is over to renew their petitions and offer other people the same opportunity.
“The visions of Abdoulaye Wade and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero have become a reality”, commented the Senegalese Minister, who thanked Spain for their openness and cooperation.
Spain’s diplomat in Senegal, Fernando Morán, stated that the hiring of these temporary workers is a demonstration of the compromise between the Spanish and Senegalese government to fight illegal immigration.
Illegal immigration of Senegalese people puts in danger the lives of hundreds of people a year and reduces all their possibilities for a future.
Let us hope these kinds of opportunities are driving us towards a healthier future where the people will be able to take the money they earned back to their countries and foment development within to improve their living conditions.
