Spain with the highest level of unemployment of all EU states
March 4, 2008
Unemployment rises by 53.406 people in February and grows 11,57% in one year! This means that there are a total of 2.315.331 unemployed in Spain, according to data presented by the “Ministerio de Trabajo y Asuntos Sociales”.
This is the third time since 1997 that unemployment increments in February, the highest was in 2002, with an increase of 74.886 unemployed.
Unemployment has grown by 23.760 persons in the service industry, whereas in the construction has destroyed 12.466 jobs, and in agriculture, 8.858. Observing this, we can see that this is linked to the situation Spain is in these days. A high increase in prices leads to the reduction of service sectors such as tourism. The crash of the real estate market has lead to a decrease in the necessity for construction. The small retailers are fighting to keep up with the big surface supermarkets.
Male unemployment has risen by 3% compared to January, up to 964.233 persons, whereas the female unemployment has done so by 1,8% by 1.351.098 unemployed.
The President of our government, Jose Luis Zapatero, however, still insists Spain is “neither in a situation of crisis nor recession”.
