Spain recuperating relations with Morocco
January 4, 2008
The president of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has expressed his desire to regain the relations with Morocco. Zapatero has sent a letter to the King Mohammed VI where he asks to regain diplomatic relations after the crisis caused by the visit of the King [of Spain] approximately two months ago. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos visited the Moroccan capital Rabat personally on Thursday this week.
The visit of the Kings was viewed as colonial both by politicians from Morocco as well as its citizens. Also an issue on the agenda was the topic of the territories occupied by Spain. Ceuta and Melilla, under Spanish sovereignty since 1580 and 1496, are claimed by Morocco that considers them part of its territory. Neither diplomats appear to agree.
Spain is very keen on getting diplomatic relations back off the ground and having the Moroccan Ambassador to Spain return as soon as possible.
