Javier Bardem makes history!
February 25, 2008
The Spanish actor Javier Bardem received the Oscar for best secondary actor, and it is the first time a Spanish actor achieves this. He dedicated it, amongst others, to his mother (Pilar Bardem) and to his country. “I will need a lot of whiskeys to assimilate this!” he declared.
He obtained his first Oscar for his acclaimed role as a ruthless assassin in “No Country for Old Men” from the Coen brothers.
Upon the reception, Bardem, dressed in a black suit, white shirt and dark tie, joked about his appearance in the film “Thank you to the Coens for being crazy enough to think that I could do that, and to put one of the most horrible haircuts in history over my head,” he said.
This prize marks Bardem’s international career, which began in 2000 with “Before sunset” where he was also a candidate for the Oscars. Although hesitant at first to take the role in “No Country for Old Men”, he decided to take it as it had always been a dream of his to work with the brothers Joel y Ethan Coen.
