Spanish universities go WifiAll Spanish public universities will have WiFi at the start of the next school year in 85% of their surface thanks to the “Campus en Red” initiative.

It is esteemed that 1.283.000 million Students, 90,000 professors and 40,000 administrative workers will benefit from this new WiFi zone. WIFI Technology (Wireless Fidelity) allows users to access the web from any point of coverage without cables.

The “Campus en Red” initiative has been instigated by Red.es, an entity of the “ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio” and by the “Conferencia de Rectores de Universidades Españolas (CRUE)”. The Project began in 2006 and was supported by 34 Spanish universities, of which 26 already benefit from this novelty.

“Campus en Red” is part of the “Plan Avanza” (www.planavanza.es) for the development of the Society of Information in Spain and has a budget of 7,8 million Euros.

On another level, it facilitates the mobility of students and educational staff amongst the different Spanish universities adhered to the MovIRIS/eduroam service, administered by RedIRIS.

Furthermore, they are planning to celebrate different “campus parties” or technological events to promote the use of the net through contests online.

    This is an excellent move and will be well received by students in Spain. It is really about time that Spain and its education system advance to standards which are more than normal and existing in many other places such as the UK and the US!
