Barcelona’s bicing to be expanded throughout the whole city

January 4, 2008

BicingThe successful Bicing operation hits the 100,000 users mark and the current mayor of Barcelona personally hands over the user id card to the 100,000th suscriber. The huge success of Bicing in Barcelona has resulted in the city seriously considering extending the service throughout the metropolitan area.

The EMT (Entidad Metropolitan de Transporte) the cities transport entity is considering extending the service to such towns as Badalona or Santa Coloma de Gramenet to unite the city with its surrounding towns. After only nine months (the service was launched on the 22nd of March 2007), the Bicing operation went from 14 locations and 200 bicycles to 194 locations and 3,000 bicycles. According to the mayor, Hereu, this service has definitely been one of the most relevant events of Barcelona in 2007, which has now become: “habitual, daily and massive”.

Bicing will continue to grow in 2008, the plan being to reach 400 stations and over 6,000 bicycles. This definitely has been a successful operation!
