Spanish millionaires punished by the real estate market
March 6, 2008
For another consecutive year, the prominent Forbes Magazine presents us with its long awaited “Millionaires List”. It looks like this edition portrays the “brick men” of Spain as being this year’s big losers in this elite club of privileged members.
This year’s biggest loser in the ranking is the Valencian Enrique Bañuelos, from Astroc Mediterráneo, who has observed his fortune go up in smoke in just one year. Last year he emerged as Spain’s third richest man, with close to 7.700 million dollars in his account, and in 2008, he has fallen to number 13 in Spain and 897 on a worldwide level, with a total of 1.300 million dollars.
Spain loses 3 multimillionaires - says Steve Forbes, the editor in chief of the magazine. Names such as Joaquín Rivero, Manuel Manrique and Bautista Soler are not levelled with the world’s wealthiest people anymore.
It seems this year has not brought good omens to Spain’s rich people seeing as only 2 out of 18 Spanish have seen a growth in their fortunes, one staying immobile, Manuel Jove with 3.500 million dollars, whereas the rest have lost seats in the last year.
However, ‘los Albertos’ (Alberto Alcocer and Alberto Cortina) have just recieved their entry pass into the list, yet they are the only ones coming from our country. They share their place with Luis Portillo, President of Colonial, in number 962 of the list with 1.200 millions dollars.
Amancio Ortega, the founder and Chairman of the Inditex Group falls to number 22 with 20.200 million dollars.
On an international level, Bill Gates of Microsoft abandons his first post for the first time in 13 years to hand it over to American investor Warren Buffett, with an estimated fortune of 62, 000 million dollars.
The world, for the first time in history, hosts a massive amount of multimillionaires, with a total of 1.125.
Russia, India and China emerge as the worlds main creators of new multimillionaires.
This year also baptises the world’s youngest multimillionaire in history: the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg with a fortune of 1.500 million dollars.
